Vibration Control in earthquake prone area

GERB‘s first building project on spring elements in India is currently being implemented in Mumbai City,
Maharashtra.

In 2018 Shrem got in touch with GERB by introducing their architect and consultant new designed Fairmont hotel. As Shrem is a developer in hospitality real estate and infrastructure, the requirements in this project focus on high customer comfort and safety standards. Due to increased threats from vibrations in the metropolitan area, the structure demanded a GERB vibration isolation solution. With our mission to increase comfort and protect against vibrations, structure-borne noise and earthquake, the client could rely on our full support.

Challenge

Besides regular danger of earthquake appearance, unwanted vibration levels are caused by underground metro lines just below the new  emerging building. Data show that vibration is usually measured with a peak value of 95 VdB to 98 VdB at tunnel surface during train operation. Considering the ground attenuation between the tunnel and the hotel building and subsequent amplification inside the building, an intensity of exceeling 72 VdB can be reached in the building. Within this range of conditions and in cooperation with local authorities, GERB engineers developed a tailormade vibration control 3,5 Hz solution for meeting these high requirements.

Technical Facts:

Structure: Composite Structure
Design load: 1,200,000 kN
Base Isolation: Prestressable GERB GP-spring elements
Support frequency: 3,5 Hz

Solution

Other than conventional elastic support solutions, a system was required that delivers high load-bearing capacity for a confined space. Therefore GERB developed special spring elements with high load capacity to minimize necessary space while still meeting given requirements.
After a series of development stages, trials and tests, a spring element specially developed for SHREM project was produced. The overall solution were 500 combinations of helical steel spring elements and Viscodampers®, mostly arranged in basement roof levels. The spring elements are prestressable with the advantage of height alignment during and after installation and effective separate Viscodampers® have been installed to further dampen the overall system during unforeseen seismic events. Our team additionally supported in modelling the elements into the clients’ ETAB model, layout drawings and installation of products.

Implementation

With our sales office in Noida, further support from international GERB group experts and our local production site in Bangalore, we were able to maintain a close exchange and respond to our customers‘ requirements at any time.
The construction phase began in 2018 and completion is planned for 2023. Despite project delays due to COVID-19 impacts, we have been able to deliver service and products on time with supporting our client hand-in-hand with mounting and installation. All installed spring elements and Viscodampers® do not need any maintenance. Only a regular visual inspection will be required.
