Vibration Isolation of a Forging Hammer in Switzerland
Elastic Support from GERB for a drop forging hammer of the Flükiger company
The company Flükiger & Co. AG from Switzerland operates various drop forging hammers with impact energies between 12.5 KJ and 125 KJ at its site in Oberburg.
Due to the difficult geological conditions at the installation site and the associated high demands on the bearing systems of the forging hammers, GERB carried out vibration tests in the vicinity of the forge before the initial installation. Flükiger ultimately selected a different supplier for the bearing system.
Challenge
In 2023, Flükiger once again turned to GERB after recurring damage to the existing systems—coupled with insufficient support from the original supplier—led to growing operational concerns.
The task was to develop a functional bearing system that would ensure trouble-free operation of the forging hammer without any changes to the existing installation space.
The new support elements were required to deliver consistent damping performance, even under the significant displacements associated with low-frequency system installations.
Solution
GERB engineers have developed a new spring damper system with improved damping properties to elastically support a Beché forging hammer type KGH 8.
Technical Facts:
Vibration source: Beché forging hammer KGH 8
Impact energy: 80 KJ
Suspended total weight: 116 t
Base isolation: 12 GERB VSG Spring-Viscodamper®-combination
Storage frequency: 4 Hz
Implementation
Since the installation of the new isolation system by the GERB assembly team, Flükiger has operated the hammer without interruption. The newly developed spring-damper elements have delivered both effective vibration mitigation and exceptional structural stability—fully meeting the customer’s expectations.
In 2025, GERB is set to tackle another demanding project at Flükiger: replacing the existing bearing system on a LASCO HO-U 1250 forging hammer. The upgrade will be carried out without removing the hammer from its foundation.
